John Wain (1925 – 1994) English poet, novelist, and critic, associated with the poetry group "The Movement". As a novelist, he was part of the group labelled 'angry young men' in the 1950s. Best known for his first novel, Hurry on Down (1953), a picaresque account of a rebellious young man who rejects his lower-middle-class origins. Other novels include Travelling Woman (1959), Strike the Father Dead (1962) and The Young Visitors (1965). He published several volumes of poetry and was elected to the five-year post of Professor of Poetry at Oxford University in 1973.
