Collection Exhibitions : Landscape into Print : The British Scene 1750-1850 : Object Label : P.4437.10 Turner sketched the chain-bridge at Cauldron Snout in Upper Teesdale on the North Country tour of 1816. He supervised the preparation of the plate with his customary thoroughness, altering the composition slightly from the original watercolour, to enhance the sublimity of the scenery. He also encouraged William Smith to include stronger contrasts of light and dark, by emphasising the shafts of sunlight streaming across the image from the left.
