Image description

The streets of the Parisian suburbs and the district of Montmartre were one of Utrillo's chief sources of inspiration. This view of a winding road was taken in the village of Sannois, about 16 kilometres north-west of Paris. The painting's mat and chalky effect is partly due to its unvarnished state. One reason for varnishing paintings is to protect their surfaces from dirt and grime. However, varnish darkens over time and can both alter a painting's appearance and reduce its sense of immediacy.
