Portrait of Ambrogio Spinola, Marqués de Balbases (1569-1630), Commander-in-Chief of the Spanish Armies in the Netherlands, in grisaille, half-length, facing the spectator, in armour with a white ruff, wearing the Jewel and Order of the Golden Fleece, holding a baton in his right hand. Engraved by L. Vorsterman (Wibiral, 92). From a set of grisaille portraits by Van Dyck of artists and distinguished persons, for engravers to work from. The panels, with the exception of M.188, are all in identical English 18th Century carved and gilded Palladian frames, with tongue-and-leaf outer edge and foliate sight edge.
