Portrait of John, 2nd Duke of Montagu, K.G. (1690-1749), three-quarter-length, in a blue coat, open at the neck to reveal a white shirt, a red cloak and a long flowing wig, his right hand caressing a large dog, on the dog's collar are the letters RMIR. In an English carved and gilded frame, circa 1730, with egg-and-dart outer edge and the sides embellished with Vitruvian scrolls surmounted by a scallop shell supported by pierced acanthus s-scrolls with pendant festoons of husks and the base-rail carved with an acanthus clasp.
