The execution of James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, 1st Duke of Buccleuch, 1649-1685. Monmouth, an illigitimate son of King Charles II was executed for treason on Tower Hill on July 15, 1685 after the failure of what has become known as the Monmouth Rebellion, also known as the Pitchfork Rebellion or the West Country Rebellion. His beheading was famously botched, by the executioner Jack Ketch who took as many as five blows of the axe and a final cut with a knife to sever his head. After a 17th century work by Jan Luyken.
