Image description

A noble is strangled with a silken cord at the Ottoman Empire court of Sultan Murat IV, 1612-1640. The use of stimulants such as coffee or wine were forbidden under pain of death. Any act perceived as against the Sultan achieved the same result. The notably cruel Murat IV is thought to have ordered tens of thousands of executions during his reign. The use of the silken cord was reserved for offenders of royal or noble blood. After a work by print maker Caspar Luyken.
