Image description: Adolf Beck (1841-1909), wrongly convicted of fraud in a case of mistaken identity. A Norwegian-born British chemist, Beck was wrongfully convicted in 1896. He was pardoned in 1904 after the real criminal was identified. The furore surrounding the case led to the establishment of the Court of Criminal Appeal in 1907.
