Video description

Footage showing colonial domestic life in Allahabad (Prayagraj), and including shots of leaving Allahabad station, journeys by train and ship, scenes in Benares (Varanasi), Nicola's wedding (this is Nancy Vernede's sister and she was bridesmaid), and horse-racing at Lucknow. This film was taken by Lady Kendall, wife of Sir Charles Kendall, High Court Judge in Indian Civil Service. (04.48 to 06.30) A British woman walks in the garden, supervising Indian men working (cleaning paths, watering plants etc). (06.31 to 07.17) A group of British people gather at a train station, and Kendall leaves by train. An Indian man washes his clothes in a public fountain. The footage continues from on board the train as it leaves Allahabad station, while British people on the platform salute and wave to the camera. There is then extensive POV footage from inside the train of the passing town and countryside and arriving at Cheoki station. (07.18 to 08.12) British people, the men wearing white uniforms or suits and the women dressed formally, board a ship via a metal gangway. There is then footage from the deck of the ship of the seashore, coastal landmarks and of other passing ships. The sequence ends with footage from the deck of the ship. (08.13 to 09.12) Detailed footage of groups of Indian men and boys working in a field on their haunches. Creator: Lady Isabella Clare Kendall
