Vietnamese scavengers, including children, are surrounded by swirling dust as they grab a ride on a Hanoi rubbish truck as it arrives at Tay Mo rubbish dump, 15 kilometres outside Hanoi late July 15. Vietnam's economic reforms have helped many people's incomes rise, but many others remain locked in poverty. These scavengers, who are squatters living on or near the tip, are the last in line after others have already sifted the rubbish on the capital's streets. If they are lucky, plastic, glass and metal waste will earn them around a dollar a day. AJS/JIR/ME
