Woman milling ports in steam chest huer. Sets her own work', 1915-1918. A photograph taken by an unknown photographer during 1915-1918 of a woman at work in a British factory. Women working in wartime were often closely directed by male supervisors, but this employee is responsible for setting her own work. During World War One, many British women took up what was seen as 'men's work' to support the war effort. When the war ended, many women were reluctant to lose the independence work gave them.
