Young Israeli's mingle on a Tel Aviv street October 8, 2000 at the start of the Jewish high holy day of Yom Kippur or the Day of Atonement. The day is a 25-hour long period of fast and prayers which begins at sundown and in which Jews have to repent for their sins of the past year before God. Many young Israelis take bicycles onto the streets as no traffic is permitted on the roads. Prime Minister Ehud Barak issued an ultimatum to the Palestinians to end a cycle of violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip within 48 hours what will end at the outgoing of Yom Kippur or face the consequences of a tougher Israeli military response.
