Berlin Wall Memorial

A memorial with white crosses near the Brandenburg Gate for people who were killed trying to cross the Berlin Wall ino West Berlin. In the foreground a three-meter-high cross was erected at the corner of Ebertstraße and Scheidemannstraße on 13 August 1966 in memory of Heinz Sokolowski. Inscribed upon this cross are his dates of birth and death and story 'Nach 7 Jahren DDR-Haft erschossen auf der Flucht. ' This memorial has about 20 crosses for people who died trying to cross the Berlin Wall in the years between 1961 and 1989. one of the crosses is for Peter Fechter, who, at the age of eighteen, became one of the first victims of the Berlin Wall's border guards.
