A Lowestoft Smacksman (late 19th century)

Smacksmen, so named after the fishing boats known as 'smacks', were fishermen based in East Anglia on the West Coast of England in the fishing ports of Hull, Grimsby and Lowestoft; in the second half of the nineteenth century the English fishing industry came to be dominated by these North Sea trawling ports; illustration from the series of 'People of Europe' cigarette cards produced by Anstie in 1925; the golden age of cigarette cards was from the late 19th century until the Second World War and were immensely popular both as collector items and as a source of instruction, entertainment and amusement before the widespread use of television and radio;
