The female figures are all shown riding side saddle and carrying parasols. The group is shown on a path snaking up from the lower left to upper right. A lone walker with a large pack on his back is shown climbing the ridge in the centre. Inscribed lower right: Rigi 27th Augst [illegible words] Princess Louise stayed at Pension Wallis, Lucerne, with her mother, Queen Victoria, from 7 August to 9 September 1868. The Queen wanted to see the Alps, which her beloved Prince Albert had visited before their marriage, and her doctors had also advised the Queen that the fresh air would be good for her health. On 27 Aug 1868 the royal party made an expedition up Mount Rigi.
