View of the Spatzennacht school where a man armed with a pistol, hand grenade and knife took school children hotages in Wasserbilig, eastern Luxembourg June 1. A gunman continued to hold adults and children in the centre after his ultimatum for safe passage passed without incident. The man, armed with a pistol, grenade and knife, had demanded to be taken to a nearby airport by 0630 GMT and then flown to Libya. The gunman is an Algerian who has held Luxembourg citizenship since 1982. He walked in to the school, which acts as a pre-school nursery, creche and daycare centre, early on Wednesday afternoon. The man, in his late 30s, let some of the younger children go after he had spoken to his psychiatrist and later demanded to be flown to Libya in return for freeing his hostages. JNA/JDP
