George Romney (Dalton-in-Furness 1734 – Kendal 1802). Oil painting on canvas, Peregrine Cust, MP (1723-1785) by George Romney (Dalton-in-Furness 1734 – Kendal 1802). 1779. Three-quarter length portrait of a mature man in a powdered wig, and wearing a brown coat, white embroidered waistcoat and a white cravat. 4th son of Sir Richard Cust and Anne Brownlow, . Inscribed top left: Peregrine Cust Esqr/Son of Sir Richd. Cust/Romney pinxt. . Painted in 1779. Sittings are recorded in 1779 on May 18, 25, June 1, 7. The diary of May 25 1779 contains the entry: "Received of P Cust £9 4s for 3-qr picture." Peregrine Cust was the son of Sir Richard Cust, 2nd Bt. (1680-1734) and Anne Brownlow (1694-1779) . He was a London merchant and was MP for Bishop's Castle, 1761-8; Stockton 1768-74, Ilchester 1774-5 and Grantham, 1776-80. He died on 2 January 1785, without issue Belton House, Lincolnshire (Accredited Museum)
