Image description

A Union-Castle Line 'South & East Africa' service poster after Odin Rosenvinge (1880-1957). The poster features a description of the route via Madeira and Canaries, as well as information about the agency and its location. The style is slightly impressionistic, with a depiction of what may be the white cliffs of Dover behind the ship. There are a number of mends, rips, and discolourations throughout the poster, including an in-filling in the lower right corner that may be a photocopy of some kind. Odin Rosenvinge (1880–1957) was born in Newcastle of Danish descent. Upon leaving school he joined a Leeds-based commercial art and printing firm and began marine painting. Aged 32, he moved to Liverpool to join the commercial printers Turner and Dunnett, producing posters for a number of shipping company clients. When the firm was liquidated in the 1930s, Rosenvinge became a successful freelance artist.
