The canal that runs along Nevsky Prospekt. The bridge is named after the original wooden bridge which was painted green. After 1777 it became known as Politeisky (Police) Bridge because Chicherin, the Chief of Police lived next door. Between 1806-08 this single span bridge of bolted cast-iron blocks designed by V I Geste was built and it became the model for many of the city's bridges through the 1920s and 30s.
