Cooking in the desert, 1942. Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North Africa, 1942. As armoured units were constantly on the move tank crews often had to make their own arrangements for cooking. They would burn petrol soaked sand in a tin to heat up their mess tins. These were given the nickname ‘Benghazi burners’. From an album containing 189 photographs compiled by Major W H J Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters).
