A group photograph of Shackleton, Captain Scott, and Dr Wilson on their return to Discovery from the attempt to reach the South Pole. Behind them are the two remaining sledges, still flying their sledging flag. They were met between 6-8 miles from the ship by Skelton (Eng. Lt.) and Bernacchi (the Physicist). Bernacchi described their appearance in his diary: "Long beards, hair dirt, swollen lips & peeled complexions, & blood-shot eyes made them almost unrecognisable.
