Image description

The Investiture of the Order of the Bath. At the Head Quarters of the British Army before Sebastopol, 1855. Coloured lithograph by E Morin, from the 'The Seat of War in the East - Second Series', after William Simpson, published by Paul and Dominic Colnaghi, printed by Day and Son. The ceremony was held with the British Ambassador at Constantinople, Stratford Canning, First Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe (1786-1880), presiding. Rear-Admiral Sir Edmund Lyons (who prided himself on his resemblance to Nelson) is first in line to be invested a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, followed by Major-General Sir Colin Campbell. Generals James Scarlett, William Eyre, Richard Airey and Henry Bentinck await their turn to become Knights Commander of the Order.
