Image description

Fackeltanz Bei Hofe. Translation: Torch Dance at Court. The custom of torch dancing has existed at German courts since the days of Emperor Max I. In the past it was mostly mummeries, where the masked people led the dance with torches, but at the Prussian court festivals in the 19th century only the ceremony of the torch dance remained. For example, he initiated a wedding feast, during which the royal ministers opened a kind of polonaise. Illustration for Deutsche Kulturbilder, 1400-1900 (Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Hamburg-Bahrenfeld, 1934).
