Image description

Postillon. Lieblich war die Maiennacht, Silberwolkchen flogen . . . Translation: Postilion. The May night was lovely, silver clouds flew. . . Our ancestors had more time, and traveling was an undertaking in which all sorts of things came together: inconvenience, tranquillity, the luck of the landscape and the good weather. One was the guest of the brother-in-law Postillon, and many a master at looking and lingering complained like Goethe when he drove too fast. Illustration for Deutsche Kulturbilder, 1400-1900 (Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Hamburg-Bahrenfeld, 1934).
