Commercial Photographer. Operated Stillfried & Company (1871-1875) Yokohama, The Japan Photographic Association/Stillfried & Andersen (1875-1885) Yokohama. In 1877 von Stillfried bought Felix Beato's negatives and began publishing his "View of Japan" as renumbered /relabeled sock. It is presumed that in the late 1870's Kimbei, Kusakabe began taking photographs for von Stillfried and in 1884/85 Kimbei bought von Stillfried's negatives (which in turn included many Beato negatives) which Kimbei relabled and renumbered. Both von Stillfried and Beato were the great foreign photographers of Japan.
