In 1816 the Society's draughtman Charles Alfred Stothard was commissioned to copy the entire Bayeux Tapestry. This image is of one of the hand-coloured engravings, which were based on drawings Stothard made during his first visit. He later took the engravings with him back to France in order to hand-colour them on site. The series of drawings were published in Vetusta Monumenta between 1821 and 1823 - the first time a complete colour reproduction of the Tapestry had been made available to the public.
