OFFICIALS RELEASE SEA TURTLES BACK INTO THE SEA IN SINGAPORE, 1998-09-10 (photo)

Officials from Singapore's Underwater World tend to a sea turtle as they prepare to release a total of 12 endangered sea turtles back into the sea off Central Beach on Singapore's Sentosa island September 10. The Hawksbill and Green Turtles were returned to the sea in an effort towards marine conservation as the number of sea turtles in the wild has reduced over the years due to a combination of factors, most of which are related to human activities. The turtle pond at Underwater World serves as a sanctuary where injured, stranded and confiscated turtles are treated and rehabilitated. JO/WS
