Image description

A balloon of the airship department of the Swiss Army shortly before the start in Bern, undated photo. On 25 July 1900, 100 men, 66 horses and 14 carriages entered the first airship RS in Bern. In Beundenfeld, Berne, the city of Berne provided free building space for a balloon hall and the like. On August 3, 1900, a balloon rose above the parade ground for the first time on a rope. With the advent of military motorized aviation, the “Balloonists” had reached the peak of their game; from 1914, they provided the air force with the watch and operating crew.
