Image description

The Swiss scientist Auguste Piccard in the gondola of his balloon. Together with the Belgian Max Cosyns, he started his second stratosphere flight on 18 August 1932 in Duebendorf, Zuerich, and landed one day later near Volta on Lake Garda. They reached a record height of over 16000 meters in the stratosphere. For their flight, they used a ball-shaped pressure cabin, which was attached to a huge balloon. Apart from numerous images of this height not previously photographed, the scientists brought proof that it is possible for people to stay at extreme heights with the help of pressure booths.
