Switzerland Cast Romanese Message, 1955 (b/w photo)

The managing director of the Romanian embassy, Emmerich Stoffel, is leaving the embassy building with the help of a leader. In February 1955, armed Romanians in exile occupied the Romanian embassy in Bern in a spectacular action. Their aim is to hand over the embassy archives to a Western secret service and to capture the embassy personnel in order to exchange them for political prisoners in Romania. The final failed robbery, in which the chauffeur Aurel Setu dies, provokes the protest of Romania, which leads to a press campaign against Switzerland. The latter reacted with stricter entry conditions for Romanians.
