A portrait of Dr. Jean de Rham, taken in February 1955. De Rham was born in 1907 in Giez in the canton of Vaud. After being admitted to the bar, he entered the Political Department in 1934. From 1937 to 1946 he was Switzerland's envoy to London. The Rham was then consul general in Hamburg for a short time before being transferred to Rome as ambassador. From 1951 onwards, he worked first as a permanent Swiss executive and later as an authorized minister for the South African Union. In 1961, the Federal Council appointed him ambassador to Japan and South Korea.
