Image description: In February 1957, Paul Zenhaeusern von Unterbaech, president of the commune and teacher in the canton of Valais, taught a school class. He is the initiator of women's suffrage in his community. The local council had decided to let the women of Unterbaech take part in the vote on the obligatory civil defense for women on March 3, 1957. However, the vote was cancelled by the canton of Valais and the federal government for this municipality. The majority of cantons introduced women's voting rights at cantonal and communal level in 1971.
