The police protect visitors to the opera house as they leave the performance of May 30, 1980: Prior to that, a demonstration of the “cultural corpses” had taken place this afternoon at the Zurich Opera House, which marked the beginning of the youth movement. The 'youth' protested against the subsidization of the opera house; millions would be spent on the 'established' but little on 'alternative' culture. The subsequent 'opera house riot' was the prelude to a wave of violent clashes, in which the young people were met with complete incomprehension by civil society. It was not until 1982 that peace returned to the Limmat city.
