From 'Stonehenge: a Temple Restor’d to the British Druids' by William Stukeley, an Anglican clergyman and English antiquarian who pioneered the archaeological investigation of the prehistoric monuments of Stonehenge discovering the nearby ‘cursus’, or earthwork and recognizing the astronomical alignment of the stones and to coin the word ‘trilithon’ (from Greek ‘tri’ – three, and ‘lithos’ – stone), to describe two large vertical stones topped by a horizontal stone lintel.
