Oslo in the fall of 1965. Oslo Cleaning work has 104 garbage trucks, and cleaning workers empty 70,000 garbage cans two to three times a week, or nearly 90,000 tonnes of household waste a year. Of this, 10-12 tonnes are food residues, and a not insignificant part is hazardous waste. Most of the waste ends up on the fillings at Grorud and Romsås, while explosives and flammable substances such as paint, varnish and chemicals are burned on Alfaset farm, and the smoke settles like a thick, black cloud over Alnabru. Every day in twelve, Magne Nordli (pictured) has the job of burning today's flammable substances. He throws a burning twistdot on the mound and runs away. The giant bonfire is a fact in seconds.
