Half-length portrait of an old lady, seated wearing a black dress with a white lace collar and matching cap worn over tight ringlet-curls framing her brow. Painted when she was 90 years old. Frances Bankes, Lady Brownlow was the daughter of Sir Henry Bankes (1711-1774) an alderman and merchant of London and Frances Pembrooke; married in 1775 as his second wife, Sir Brownlow Cust, 1st Baron Brownlow of Belton (1744-1807) and brought with her a dowry of £100,000, and a collection of her father's pictures. She also bore him eleven children Belton House, Lincolnshire (Accredited Museum)
