In this w/c, the artist has aimed at a harmonious and elegant arrangement rather than a naturalistic imitation of nature. He has used thin, transparent washes, and the blue water of the stream is painted in regular parallel strokes of the brush. The white of the paper itself represents the turbulent water where it rushes over the waterfall. The trees and rocks have been organised so that the landscape is arranged in regular steps receding into distance. Francis Towne lived in Exeter.
