‘Balloon Corps Transport with Lord Roberts Army - advance on Johannesburg, S.A’, 1899. Stereoscopic photograph, Boer War, 1899. The British Army used a variety of technological innovations during the Boer War (1899-1902). Although some had been used in previous campaigns, it was the scale of their employment in South Africa which was exceptional. For example, hot air balloons were widely used for observation and directing artillery. From a box of 89 stereoscopic cards entitled, ‘South African War through the Stereoscope Pt 2 Vol 1', published by Underwood and Underwood and produced by Works and Sun Sculpture Studios, 1901 circa.
