‘Come into the ranks and fight for your King and Country - Don’t stay in the crowd and stare’, 1915 circa. By September of 1914 the British Army numbered over 2.25 million men, with a million more in reserve occupations. But by the summer of 1915 the British Army had suffered 375,000 casualties. Despite the initial enthusiasm, enlistment was slowing down. In this poster, the recruiters are appealing to men who have been thinking of joining by encouraging a sense of patriotism.
