after the Battle of Leipzig (Oct 1813) Napoleon withdrew his army to Mainz; An English copy of a German print 'Der Reinische Courier'. Napoleon runs towards the Rhine and the town of Mainz. He carries a staff topped with the sceptre of Charlemagne, a symbol of Empire. From his bag fall various papers recording the loss of allies, possessions and troops. His head and uniform are based on Dähling's engraving of Napoleon in the uniform of the Colonel of the Chasseurs of the Guard.
