Map of the distribution of stature in France: the height of the bars is inversely proportional for each department to the number of conscripts exempt for size defects, over 1000 examines. Figures give that number per 100. The twenty departments, providing the most conscripts the size of the battleships, have a double or triple bar; the first five have a triple bar. These results relate to a period before 1870, in order to understand Alsace and Lorraine (Alsace-Lorraine). Engraving in “” La Nature: revue des sciences et de leurs applications aux arts et a l'industrie”” of 11 December 1886.
