A German prisoner, 8 June 1917. Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1917. This soldier was one of over 7,000 Germans captured during the Battle of Messines (7-14 June 1917). This successful British attack witnessed the detonation of 19 underground mines under the German lines. Thousands of Germans were killed and many more left disorientated by the explosions.
