Afghan men, Jalalabad, 1878 circa.
Photograph, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1878 circa.
The tribesmen of Afghanistan defended their mountainous strongholds with great skill and courage. Armed with jezails, long and heavy muskets that were often fitted with a forked rest, they were fine marksmen and took a heavy toll on the British and Indian army units who entered their territory.
From an album of 61 photographs, 1878-1880 compiled by Lt Col C A Mercer, 4th Gurkha Regiment.
