‘Australian drivers galloping up to move the guns to forward positions during battle for Le Transloy,’ 1916. Stereoscopic photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1916. First Anzac Corps joined 4th Army’s attack at Le Transloy in early November 1916. The battle had been raging since 1 October as the British and Canadians attempted to capture a line of German defences along Transloy Ridge. The latter had been built while the Allies slowly advanced across the original three lines of defences that existed on the Somme. The operation against this fourth line made little headway and the attackers sustained heavy losses. After the weather had deteriorated the offensive was called off.
