Image description

Group portrait of William Carter with his sons, 1890 circa. Photograph on card backing, 1890 circa. William Carter, seated in civilian dress, had joined The Buffs in 1857, becoming a Colour Sergeant in 1866, then Quarter Master Sergeant and Sergeant Major of 45th Brigade Depot, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment in 1875. He served until 1890 when he was the Sergeant Major of ‘K’ Coy, 2nd Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Carter is seated outside, with a dog lying at his feet, with his sons, Hugh Harry and Percy Lewis. Captain Ernie Carter MC and another sitter, named ‘Lewis’, are also pictured. Percy died of disease in Bloemfontein in 1900 during the Boer War (1899-1902), and Hugh Harry was killed in France, in October 1918. One of three photographs associated with Sergeant-Major William Carter, 2nd Battalion, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs), 1866-1890 circa. From the collection of the former Buffs Regimental Museum.
