Image description

‘On the inhospitable Gallipoli hillsides where the burning bush drove us from many hard won positions’, 1915. Stereoscopic photograph, World War One, Gallipoli, (1915). Despite repeated attempts to break out, throughout the summer and autumn of 1915 the Allies remained trapped around their three beachheads at Helles, Anzac Cove and Suvla Bay. Each of these was overlooked by high ground commanded by strong Ottoman forces and was under constant artillery and sniper fire. The soldiers lived and fought in appalling conditions. Casualties from heat and disease overwhelmed the inadequate medical facilities. From a collection of 96 stereoscopic photographs entitled ‘The Great War’ including the official series.
