Image description

Glenn Hayward (L) guides a 4.2 metre tall statue of a World War I soldier to its final resting place on a plinth with the city's CentrePoint Tower in the background at the approach to Sydney's Anzac Bridge April 24. The bronze statue, to be unveiled tomorrow, weighs two tonnes, took four months to sculpt and spent four-and-a-half months at a city foundry being cast. The soldier is depicted in the "Rest on Arms Reversed" postion and will be a permanent tribute to the Australian men and women who died in conflict. Tomorrow Australia honours their war dead and survivors with the annual ANZAC memorial parades and services throughout the nation. WB/TAN
