PERFORMANCE ARTIST GOES UNDERWATER IN MELBOURNE, 1999-06-05 (photo)

Performance artist Daniel Taylor stands with his head inside a glass tank of water at an art display in Melbourne June 5. The artwork, titled "Aquarium", by Israeli-born Yael Davids, joins dozens of other works by international and Australian artists spread over eight floors in an inner-city building. Participant Taylor, who spends seven minutes immersed in distilled water, wears ear plugs and a nose plug and is required to blink during submersion with the only method of breathing through his mouth connected to a tube linked to the outside of the tank. Biennial organisers are hoping that 30,000 visitors will view the artworks during its six-week season. WB/TAN/JDP
