In 1955, Sterling and Francine Clark established a museum within walking distance of Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts where they would store their vast collection of paintings, prints, sculpture and porcelain. The Clarks had spent a great part of their marriage in Paris where they accumulated a considerable collection of French impressionist works from Renoir, Monet, Degas and Pissarro, among others. Today, the Clark houses one of the largest collections of impressionist works within the United States. The Onions by Pierre Auguste Renoir (right) is believed to have been one of Sterling Clark's favorites.

The Clarks also had an affinity for 19th century American painting; John Singer Sargent, Frederic Remington and Winslow Homer figure prominently within the collection. Bridgeman has access to a significant assortment of Renaissance to 19th century European and American painting and sculpture, prints and English silver.
