Football Association celebrates 150-year anniversary

It was 150 years ago that The Football Association was founded on 26 October 1863 at the Freemasons’ Tavern in London as the governing body of football in England.

For centuries before there were  no universally accepted rules for playing football. In each public school the game was formalised according to local conditions; but when the schoolboys reached university, chaos ensued when the players used different rules.

Thanks to the Football Association, the sport has developed dramatically, with strong progress made for the equality of disabled and female players
